The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Well folks, it’s back – the Twilight Saga continues with the second installment of the blockbuster book turned movie mega-hit, New Moon. Bella is still in Forks, Washington with her awkward father, Charlie, and the man half the women in the world want to be bitten by, Edward, is still as pastey and cold as ever. Of course, Jacob, the hairy man beast the he is, has abs a girl could grate cheese on but we’re not allowed to think about that as Jacob is still a minor and that would be wrong.

New Moon doesn’t really break any new ground and fans of the book are likely to be a little disappointed by how much the film has strayed from the book. Oh, who are we kidding? The movie has Taylor Lautner shirtless and the gorgeous-no-matter-what-he-wears Robert Pattinson so girls of all ages will love it.

Truthfully speaking, I didn’t enjoy the movie as much as I hoped, but considering how insanely excited I was to see New Moon, there was no way it could be anything other that a little disappointing. After repeated watchings I have warmed to it significantly and have found myself enjoying it much more.

Brittany Murphy Tribute (2009)

Brittany Murphy was a very talented actress who suddenly passed away today at the young age of only 32 of cardiac arrest. There’s no official word yet on what caused her death, but I thought it would be fitting to post a chick flick starring her in it, and I chose her recent TV movie, the Nora Roberts’ Tribute romance.

It’s the story of Cilla McGowan (Murphy) who was a former child star and now loves to restore old houses. She begins working on her grandmother’s home, to save it from falling apart, but is haunted by dreams of her and how she died many years ago.

As this tale unfolds, she becomes romantically involved with her hunky neighbor, Ford Sawyer (cool name!) and the passion begins…

Ghost (1990)

Oh Ghost… what a beautiful, amazing, moving, touching movie. Ghost features my favorite performances ever by Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. This is what love stories are all about!

The idea that two people could be as in love as Sam Wheat and Molly Jensen are in Ghost is so powerful. That’s the kind of unconditional and allconsuming love us ladies dream about. The pottery scene… oh goodness! That may possibly be my favorite love scene in any movie ever.

Ghost makes me a sappy, weepy emotional wreck and that’s why I love it so much. It cuts right to the core of your soul and holds tight. It is the ultimate chick flick, the ultimate tearjerker and the ultimate love story.

Romeo + Juliet (1996)

It’s hard to choose a favorite Romeo and Juliet remake because there have been so many great versions of this Shakespeare classic, but it I had to pick just one, it would have to be the 1996 version with Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes starring as the ultimate tragic lovebirds.

Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet is bold and visually stunning. Taking the actual Elizabethan dialogue and setting it against a modern backdrop was a brave step, but it works fantastically. There is nothing lost in translation here and that might be the biggest reason this film works so well.

Titanic (1997)

Legendary – a classic. I don’t really know what to say about Titanic. We’ve all seen it and we all love it. This is a movie that gets better every time you watch it.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have the kind of chemistry that sets the screen on fire. We lose ourselves in Jack and Rose. Leonardo and Kate don’t exist. They play their roles flawlessly. It’s no surprise no one believed they weren’t a couple off-screen.

Titanic really has everything a girl could ask for in a chick flick – romance, drama, action, a cute boy and a weep-inducing ending. There is nothing about Titanic that doesn’t work and that’s why we all love it so much.

The Notebook (2004)

The Notebook is the ultimate chick flick. Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams – what incredible chemistry. You believe in their love and you want so badly for it to work for them.

The Notebook may very well be perfect. You connect on a deeply emotional basis with the characters and in the end, you’re left feeling moved. If you don’t have a box of tissue on hand for this movie, you’re a fool. You will need it.

The cast is incredible all the way around with heartbreaking performances by James Garner and Gena Rowlands. I really can’t say enough good things about The Notebook. It’s just an incredible movie that every woman needs to watch at least once. Just don’t be surprised when you find yourself going back for seconds – and thirds, and fourths…

The Secret Life of Bees (2008)

Okay, Dakota Fanning, I demand to see some ID, because after watching you in The Secret Life of Bees, I do not believe for one second you were born in 1994. There’s just no way, not a chance, because there you are sharing the screen with enormous talents like Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson and Paul Bettany and it’s like we’re watching their contemporaries – not someone who is at the very least, ten years younger than the youngest of them.

The Secret Life of Bees is one of those great tear jerker movies that packs a heck of a punch from the very first scene. At times, it’s not easy to watch. You feel so much for Dakota Fanning’s charater, Lily, that seeing what she goes through is a harrowing experience. In the end, though, you are rewarded with a rich, fulfilling movie that makes you appreciate you family and friends.
