a must see movie, the backup plan
Zoe (Lopez) has given up on finding the man of her dreams and decided to become a single mother, this being the eponymous backup plan. She undergoes artificial insemination. The same day she meets Stan (O’Loughlin) when they step into a taxi, both claiming to be first. They argue before she gets out because he’s ruining her good mood and he gets out when she says that. Thus both lose the cab. Stan follows Zoe and picks up the penny she turned over for good luck. She joins a mutual aid group of single pregnant women. Later Zoe is at the Farmer’s Market and runs into Stan and learns that he makes cheese. Stan is surprised to see her and they introduce themselves. When his classmate gives the impression that they are going out, Zoe walks away. They meet again in Zoe’s store during a lecture about dogs, and are eventually asked to take their increasingly heated conversation outside. Stan convinces Zoe to go on a no-obligations date. Zoe is still uncertain whether she is pregnant or not and if she should tell Stan. The night she takes the test, Stan takes her for a romantic dinner in a garden. Things didn’t turn out as well as planned when he spills the wine and a fire occurs. At the end of the night Stan asks her to come to his farm during the weekend and Zoe finds out that she is pregnant

a New and anice movie, DATE NIGHT
Phil and Claire Foster are a couple who have been married for several years. Their days consists of them taking care of their children and going to work and coming home and going to bed. But they find time to have a date night wherein they go out and spend some time together. When another couple they know announce that they’re separating because they’re in a rut, Phil feels that he and Claire could be too. So when date night comes Phil decides to do something different. So they go into the city and try to get into a new popular restaurant. But when it’s full and still wanting to do this, Phil decides to take the reservation of a couple who doesn’t show up. While they’re having dinner two men approach them and instructs them to stand up and go with them. They think the men are with the restaurant and want to talk to them about taking someone else’s reservation. But it appears the couple whose reservation they took crossed someone and the two men work for this person. The men are after something, but whatever it is they don’t have it.

Couples Retreat (2009)

Couples Retreat is one of those comedy movies that had mixed reviews because of it’s “hit or miss” nature. Sometimes it’s really funny, while other times it seems to try too hard. It’s the story of 8 friends who get a discount rate on a vacation at a resort…the only catch is that it involves mandatory unconventional therapy along the way.

There are lots of jokes about male egos and stereotypes that usually fall flat, but it still makes for an ok “couple movie”, if you want to watch your boyfriend squirm while watching a semi-romantic chick flick.

It’s not the worst film ever made in the genre, but it’s still not for everyone (of course, what is?). Watch Couples Retreat as the light-hearted comedy with a message in there somewhere, that it was meant to be…and then walk away and be glad you weren’t there yourself to experience it firsthand…

Starring Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman, Jean Reno, Jon Favreau, Faizon Love, Kristin Davis, Malin Akerman and Kristen Bell.

The Proposal (2009)

Sandra Bullock. Betty White. Ryan Reynolds. Craig T. Nelson. These are just four of the many, many reasons I would highly recommend watching The Proposal.

Sandra Bullock has made some less than spectacular career choices – some of which I couldn’t even sit through – but in The Proposal, the girl we all loved so much in Miss. Congeniality, While You Were Sleeping and The Lake House is back and the world is a more adorable place for it. Yes, Sandra plays an ice queen with seemingly no human emotion but she’s still endearing and lovable.

Then we have Ryan Reynolds. His comedic timing is spot on and he has incredible chemistry with Sandra. Betty White is always incredible as is the often underrated Craig T. Nelson.

With a winning cast, a sharp and witty script and some great scenery, The Proposal is a must see.

My Life in Ruins (2009)

How many ways can I say I love Nia Vardalos? Well, we’re about to find out! The woman is gorgeous in such a human way – not one of the alien, abnormal, freakishly disproportionate and depressingly perfect Hollywood stars we tend to see in these roles. I completely believe her in any role she plays. Funny lady and a talented actress. She brings so much to My Life in Ruins, and honestly, the movie was already pretty fabulous to begin with.

The premise of My Life in Ruins is timeless and classic, but it doesn’t feel stale or old. It’s laugh-out-loud funny from beginning to end and the scenery is breathtaking. By the end of the movie, you’re in love with the characters you’ve just spent an hour and a half getting to know… and you probably want to book the next flight to Greece!

My Life in Ruins is a great feel good movie with lovable characters and a wonderful, enjoyable and engrossing story. Definitely worth watching – twice.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past (2009)

Have I mentioned yet that Matthew McConaughey is a hunk? No? Matthew McConaughey is a babe. I’m sure you’re aware of that though, so let’s talk about Ghosts of Girlfriends Past.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with Ghosts of Girlfriends Past. I love the above mentioned babe although I’m the first to admit I’ve seen him in some pretty wretched movies and Jennifer Garner… well, I’m not entirely sure how I feel about her. I adored her in 13 Going on 30, but some of her other movies – which shall remain nameless – have left me feeling a little underwhelmed. For that reason, I almost skipped this one. Then came the two words that made me run to the theater – Breckin and Meyer.

I love (an unnatural, almost shameful kind of love) Breckin. He is the epitome of adorable. The guy’s like a while basket of puppies with kittens on top. I call this the Breckin Factor. When I see his name attached to any project, I feel an undeniable force pulling me to it. Add to the Breckin Factor Lacey Chabert and Michael Douglas plus delicious Matty, and it was a must see.

All that said, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past was actually a pretty good movie. The plot seemed a little blah to me at first, but they really made it work. There are some cringe-worthy over the top cheesy moments, but they’re few and far between and hey, it’s a chick flick. What would a chick flick be without a little cheese?

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past isn’t the best chick flick ever made, but it’s fun and has more than one great laugh out loud moment. My personal favorite involved the wedding cake. Hilarious. Worth a watch on a rainy afternoon or a lazy night at home.

Miss. Congeniality (2000)

There are so many things to love about Miss. Congeniality, I don’t even know where to start. Sandra Bullock is adorable. Benjamin Bratt is a babe. Candice Bergen is hilarious. William Shatner is… William Shatner. What more needs to be said about good ole Bill? The writing is witty and fun and Sandra Bullock is completely believable as Gracie Hart – the tough, gritty FBI agent that has to act like a beauty queen to prevent a terrorist group from bombing the pageant. Will she save the day? Well, of course, but it’s fun watching her go through the trials and tribulations along the way.

Candice Bergen might be one of my all time favorite actresses. She’s always so hilarious. She instantly makes any movie she’s in better and Miss. Congeniality is no different – and it was already a darn good movie.

Plus Benjamin Bratt. Did I mention he’s gorgeous? No? Well he is. Mmm.

Miss Congeniality is the type of movie that is just plain fun to watch. It’s not a thinker, but who wants that in a chick flick anyway? We wanna cry or we wanna laugh – and in Miss. Congeniality, you just may do both.

17 Again (2009)

Now, how can anyone complain about a movie that features a shirtless Zac Efron within the first five minutes? Not me, that’s for sure! What a friggin’ babe! How old is he again? Oh who cares, it’s not illegal to look! Vanessa Hudgens is a lucky, lucky (and frequently naked, apparently) woman.

So, aside from the gorgeousness of Mr. Efron, there are plenty of reasons to watch 17 Again. Hi, Matthew Perry. I love you. You’re so funny. Let’s have babies. Oh, and the movie’s pretty good too.

The cast – both lead and supporting -deliver believable and convincing performances and the script is witty and sharp. For those that don’t love darling Zacey-Pants, watch 17 Again anyway. You won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait to see the career choices Zac makes. He’s a decent actor and if he manages to get away from the whole pretty boy, Disney thing, he should have a promising future.

17 Again is entertaining from beginning to end and although the premise has been done and done and done the script manages to keep it fresh. A winner all around.

13 Going on 30 (2004)

13 Going on 30 is one of my favorite romantic comedies. It has everything going for it. Fun music, a familiar but always entertaining premise, love and romance, an awesome villain to loathe (Judy Greer’s snobby and conniving Lucy Wyman) and the adorable Mark Ruffalo to root for. I don’t think I even need to mention the sheer enjoyability of Jennifer Garner’s performance as time traveling Jenna Rink. It’s just so much fun to watch Jennifer in this role because it’s so obvious she had a blast doing it. C’mon, watch the Thriller dance scene and tell me she wasn’t loving that!

13 Going on 30 is clearly not the first movie to use the premise of a teenager wishing to be older and waking up in the morning to find that they are (Hi ‘Big’, I’m talking about you, here), but what it lacks in originality it makes up for with heart. You are practically on your knees in front of the screen begging for the happy ending you know you’re going to get. You fall in love with the characters and the movie rewards your affection.

13 Going on 30 might just be the perfect chick flick. Lessons are learned and true love prevails. So what if that rarely happens in real life – that’s what we have movies like this for.

Sunshine Cleaning (2008)

I just want to start this out by saying that Amy Adams should win every award that can be given in the field of acting – best supporting actor and best actor included – because this woman is amazing in everything I’ve ever seen her in. She’s beautiful, talented and just generally awesome.

Okay, now that I have that out of the way, Amy Adams is just one of the incredible performers that make up the cast of Sunshine Cleaning. Little Jason Spevack is adorable as Ocsar and Alan Arkin is brilliant as family patriarch and perennial screw up, Joe. Emily Blunt (whom I first fell in love with as Emily in The Devil Wears Prada)… what can I even say about Emily Blunt. Her performance as Norah in this movie is absolutely heartbreaking.

I had some problems with Sunshine Cleaning – namely the ending. Sometimes a more open, unresolved ending works, but I felt there needed to be more here. I wanted to know what happened with Rose, Amy Adam’s character, and the one armed model builder Winston. Surely it was love? Am I wrong here?

Aside from the unsatisfying ending, Sunshine Cleaning may have been one of my favorite movies this year. Just a word of warning though, considering the premise of the movie (two sisters need money and start a bio-hazard removal service, which basically means they ‘clean up’ crime scenes etc, after the body has been removed) there is a fair bit of blood. If you have a weak stomach you might have a hard time with this one.

Sunshine Cleaning is full of humor, real human emotions and a healthy dose of family drama. When Norah and Rose arrive to clean up after an elderly woman’s husband commits suicide, I dare you not to at least tear up a little over the interaction between Rose and the widow. Beautiful.
